What is the difference between japanese jujutsu and aikido?

Aikido takes its roots from (among other things) jujutsu. Aikido has a much greater emphasis on locks and throws, whereas jujutsu has locks, throws, punches, kicks, bites, etc.

Jujutsu was invented by samurai who used it in battle, usually against armed and armored opponents. Aikido, by contrast, was invented by Morihei Ueshiba, a spiritualist, and hence it has a more spiritual aspect to it. Aikido is a relatively young martial art, as it was only invented in the last 100 years or so. Jujutsu, on the other hand, is ancient, unless you are talking about some of the more recent offshoots like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Both arts focus on turning an attacker%26#039;s momentum and force against him and involve a lot of grappling.
