I'm planning on learning aikido, is it a good form of martial arts to learn?

I took Aikido for several years. I trained sometimes 6-7 days a week. My club had a 6am class so you could train during the morning and evenings too.

I guess the question is what are you looking to get out of a martial art? The second question is what are you willing to put into it? If you want self-defense you need to train hard to develop strength, balance and all of the things that will help you to win quickly in a fight. A martial art is a vehicle to get you to that level, but it is not the only thing you鈥檒l need. You also need to keep an open mind to other techniques and martial arts.

I loved training in Aikido. The people I worked-out with were the best. Many of them became close friends. I trained hard and became apart of something more. You should try Aikido for a while and give yourself sometime to get an idea of what it is about. If you don鈥檛 like there are many other martial art you can try.

I am currently looking at Krav Maga. From my research it looks like a very good art for self-defense.|||I think that you should consider a Reality Based Self Defense because traditional arts such as Aikido and TKD aren%26#039;t going to help you that well in a street fight. Good Luck in your decision.

|||You can, but Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is probably the best you%26#039;ll learn because its all counter moves. Theres no hitting and its best if you use it in a bar fight. You use the person%26#039;s momentum to help you win.|||Aikido IS a good discipline to learn, No Martial Art is better than another.

While Aikido is one of the LEAST aggressive disciplines, it can also be a very good one if you put the proper effort into learning like any other Martial Art.

What you must do is make sure that it is the right Martial Art for YOU, but only you can make that choice for yourself.

good luck and good training.|||According to a friend who was training for about six months so far, yes. It is a powerful art.|||I%26#039;ve been doing Aikido for the past four months or so.

I enjoy it very much. Aikido is very elegant and it focuses on balance, flexibility and subduing rather than harming your opponent (Although you could seriously injure someone who was untrained). It%26#039;s more of a self-defense art than a combat art (In great part because of the philosophy of its founder).

It also carries with it a large amount of philosophical understanding.

Hope this helps.|||I would think you would ask that question first and if you like what you find out, then you would plan on learning aikido.|||i practice american kenpo but i am dying to learn aikido so id say go for it|||it is excellent form! it will teach discipline, and your muscles will be stronger, and more limber!
