I would like to know if aikido is really effective for self defense.?

aikido in self defense|||that depends on the way you train.

but if you train properly it can be a very effective art for defense. The first principle in aikido is still the soundest if you ask me. whatever comes at you get out of it%26#039;s way and handle it from a safe angle. it can be effective but usually takes a long time before you can use it at a practical level|||Sort of depends on how you define effective. After many years of martial arts training to include Akito, I%26#039;ve come to the conclusion that systems that requires hour of constant practice every week and in some cases requires you to be in excellent physical shape to even do effectively, are well just not that effective.

Self defense is not about winning a fight, its about survival. Learn avoidance and awareness. Learn to understand body language, and learn how to defuse potentially violent situations.

In terms of a style, learn what every like, but understand concepts and don%26#039;t just learn techniques. Have the proper mindset, understanding intent.

Then get out of the habits you will get. Under stress you will respond like you train and as often as not that means pulling kicks and punches, etc. Self defense in ugly, brutal, and any one on one confrontation should be over in seconds

Look at systems like TFT and SCARS for a modern approach to self defense that is pretty far removed from traditional martial arts IF self defense is truly what you want to learn.

Don%26#039;t get me wrong, an individual that does go through the hours of training every week, month after month in a decent martial arts school at some point will be good enough to defend themselves in most situations. But I have to ask if that is effective?

Good Luck|||Any art is effective for self defense. The only one that isn%26#039;t is called ignorance...or in other words believing you do not need to have training until it is too late.

Aikido can be a great defensive art but it will take many years to be competent to use it against another trained martial artist. However against a person that has little or no training you will be effective providing you can learn to apply it against a resisting attacker...which is something most Aikido schools fail to teach until you are at higher levels in your training.|||NO! only the person himself is effective!! no matter what art you learn and use it is you who must be effective by continued training and self discipline.. you can have all the highest belts of all the arts but when it comes down to a life and death fight YOU must be able to respond and protect yourself!!|||Yes!!!

If trained properly and not forgeting to use atemi waza ( striking vital areas ).

Best wishes :)***|||against the average person on the street, it is quite effective

while on the ground...it is not|||try tomiki or yoshinkan
