other than the bo staff!|||aikido does not use a bo staff.
We use a jo which is about 40 cm shorter than a bo.
Furthermore we train on use and defense against the bokken (wooden training sword) and part of the training also includes defens against a Tanto or knife|||Actually it%26#039;s the Jo staff that%26#039;s used in Aikido training not the Bo, the difference being in the length of the staff. The Jo is shorter, at about 4 ft. in length, while the Bo staff is usually longer at around 6 ft. in length. The use of a Bokken or wooden sword is also taught during advanced level training. But they%26#039;re not Aikido weapons per se, but merely training aids to compliment your empty hand training. The training in Jo and Bokken helps develop good distance gauging skills(Ma ai), proper posture and body movement (Tai Sabaki) and proper breathing techniques(Kokyu). Overall, the added weapons training improves one%26#039;s footwork since Aikido movements were derived from the sword and spear fighting forms. It also helps the student develop familiarity and confidence in facing an attacker armed with a weapon with longer reach.|||The weapons primarily used are: to jo (staff), tanto (knife), and bokken (sword).
