What weapons do Aikido students learn?

Aikido dojo often incorporate in their practice three weapons. Sword (bokken), short staff (jo-staff), and knife (tanto). The techniques involve weapon take aways, techniques while holding a weapon, or practice involving both people being armed.

Most people, in my experience, detail aikido weapons practice as an extension of the empty hand techniques. Their practice helps us understand the historical development of aikido techniques, and build better form, stability, and movement.

Edit - Traditional Aikido weapons practice does not include the bo-staff, gun, nor Iaido practice as mentioned below. Saito Sensei, founder of Iwama Aikido, is often noted as the person responsible for setting out the weapons forms used today and he based his material off of O Sensei%26#039;s weapons forms. Chiba Sensei in the United States has developed and adjusted some aikido weapons practice, but I believe much of this was derived from Saito Sensei%26#039;s teachings at the Iwama dojo.|||bo 6 foot staff JO 48 in to 52 in staffBOKKEN wooden practice sword KATANA KATA 2 man sword drills IAIDO quick draw sword practice.

I%26#039;ve seen them train with a bokan (thats a wooden samurai sword) and a short staff (sometimes called JO staff, 4 ft.long; as opposed to BO staff which is 5 ft long). They reason they train with them is to learn the basic skills %26amp; body mechanics behind their use, so that they in turn can learn to disarm someone in un-armed combat.|||I took aikido for a year, before the guy teaching moved away.
