Which is better to learn hapkido or aikido?

i don%26#039;t want to learn tae kwan do or karate....

i would really like to learn hapkido but i don%26#039;t think there are any instructors in my area.... im searching on yellowpages.com and all its saying is %26quot;We found 61 businesses for %26quot;hapkido%26quot; in the (my area code) area%26quot; (its not giving me the results) i found some aikido places but the instructors aren%26#039;t japanese... im pretty sure that doesn%26#039;t matter though|||Both founders of Hapkido and Aikido studied Daito Ryu Aiki jutjitsu. So the foundation of both arts is Aiki jujitsu. But the philosophies are different. Aikido to make a long story short follows more of a spiritual, non-violent approach. While Hapkido follows more of a tactical, direct approach. Hapkido is a very complete combat art. Meaning it covers striking, kicking, grappling, throwing and joint locking,etc, more so than Aikido. Contrary to what others think HKD is NOT a mix of Aikido and TKD. Major falsehood! HKD kicking is based on TaeKyyon a very ancient Korean kicking based art. HKD does have significant differences in its kicking philosophies any real Hapkido master will tell you that. I%26#039;ve been doing Hapkido for 10yrs straight. There are several variations of Hapkido, depending on who you go to will determine what they emphasize more. e.g. More kicking or joint locking or grappling. A good school will have a balanced mixture of all the above. Some TKD schools add HKD to there programs. But my experience with that is that it is very watered down. It%26#039;s just not the same thing as learning Hapkido from A HAPKIDO master. Not some one that dabbles with both trying to make more money. And being in law enforcement for 12 yrs, I know it works in the real world.|||In Hapkido you will learn the basics of TKD (which is the really good stuff anyway), and in TKD you will learn the basics of Hapkido.... they are both Korean styles with an emphasis on different ranges of fighting.. and both are very good stuff... Aikido is another great art I am sure i just have no hands on experience to give you.... there is no %26quot;better art%26quot;.. just find the one that you are most willing to apply yourself to and get started... good luck|||it just depends on you.

you have already said that you would rather take HKD so no matter what other style you went with other than HKD you wouldn%26#039;t like it because you have already made your mind up taking HKD.|||what does japanese haf ta do with it? tell you what go check out ALL the martial arts places in your area (of the arts you are interested in) find the est one.. and study there... study hard.. study smart, study often, make it your own after you get your feet wet in it.... then pick up another art..... so dont take the opinions of random ppl off the internet (like me lol) go to hapkido and aikido classes at different schools (more than 1 school for each style.. ) and pick the best.. for you.... (more then one cas.... well threre are ... lets just say one of my buddies.. there was a aikido school near hear and a aikido school a hour drive away....... he picked the hour (and a half?) drive.... and and im glad he did cas that buddy... is my instructor|||The quality and frequency of your training will far outweigh your style.|||Hapkido is basically the Korean version of Aikido. Like TKD is basically a Korean version of Karate.|||hapkido is better in my opinion. but i think judo is a better thing to do :] jsut my opinion cuz i like judo lol|||hapkido covers more areas of fighting than aikido does traditionally but it depends on the instructor to determine which one is %26quot;better%26quot;

try searching http://www.local.yahoo.com type in your area code and martial arts. some places may put hapkido in their keywords so when you search for it it will show up that doesnt necessarily mean they teach it though

and you are right you dont have to be japanese to be good at aikido

http://martialartsplanet.awardspace.com/...|||Hapkido has striking, grappling, and a few weapons techniques. Hapkido %26gt; Aikido.|||well, hapkido is a bit more belligerent than aikido, meaning it has a few more strikes thrown into the curriculum and technique repertoire, while aikido is purely defensive (at least until you move to the advanced levels).

IMHO, hapkido is more versatile than aikido. but hey, it depends on what you%26#039;re looking for in a martial art.

(make sure the dojo/jang isn%26#039;t a mcdojo. there is a bullshido infestation in america. make sure it%26#039;s legit!)
