How long does it take to get black belt in aikido?

i just wanted to start aikido i wanted to know how long does it take to get my black belt in it,thanks.......|||US Aikido Federation test requirements:

http://www.2rivers.org/usaftest.pdf

In short, if you train every single day and get your instructors approval for each test and test the moment you have the required hours, then slightly over three years.

Typically you will average three days a week, you may not be allowed by your instructor to test when you have the hours, and tests only happen at certain intervals. Typically 7-10 years.

Until you reach shodan in Aikido, you are not practicing Aikido, you are preparing to practice Aikido. When you reach shodan and put on the hakama, instructors will assume you are an Aikdo practitioner, and will have no mercy on you when throwing you. In traditional dojo%26#039;s there are no other colored belts. You can easily tell how far someone is onthe journey the moment you grab them.

It%26#039;s not about the belt, it%26#039;s about the journey. That Hakama is a pain in the butt, I%26#039;m not sure I want one.|||as long as it takes. seeing how specific aikido is there is really no set schedule for grading and such. normally your teacher will evaluate each student individually and decide when you are due for your next grading. Not every one will grade at the same pace. And of course not every one trains as much as the other. it%26#039;s all individual.

I%26#039;ve seen gifted students get there in 8 years while others take 10 or even 12 years it%26#039;s too personal to really tell.

The only thing that is certain is seeing the difficulty grade of aikido you usually take longer than any other art

besides a black belt should be seen as a reward for your achievements not as a goal in itself

|||Many people take as little as 2.5 years to as many as 7. It depends on natural skill level, the amount of time you spend at the dojo and even the dojo itself. When you start aikido you start at the rank of rokkyu (6th kyu) or a white belt. There are 6 kyu until you can reach shodan or black belt. Most dojo%26#039;s only give white belts for non-black belts. It took my sister whom had no prior martial arts experience 4 and a half years to reach shodan. As a side note belts shouldn%26#039;t be why your starting a martial art in fact belt were not give until the 1800%26#039;s, thousand of years of martial arts with no rank. I myself am sandan (3rd degree black belt in kendo and nidan (2nd) karate-do in which i have studied 2 years in japan and 14 years in total.|||O-Sensei would probably give you one of his infamous smart@ss answers and tell you %26quot;whatever your destined lifespan is,%26quot; meaning, your whole life. One of the things he used to do to protest people conceited about their rank, is that he would show up to the Dojo wearing a white belt, sometimes only a beginer%26#039;s gi. In Aikido, beginers start out in a gi, and then in more advanced levels they put on those weird black pant dress things, forget what they%26#039;re called.

So anyway wearing nothing but a beginer%26#039;s gi, O-Sensei was infamous for deliberately bullying any conceited black belts. He would then tell them to stop being so full of themselves, and to train harder. One of the disturbing things about O-Sensei that I read, is that for all he sacrificed for his Aikido, he also had a streak of cruelty to him. For people who behaved in an imoral manner, for example a group of students, he behaved cruelly. A group of students went out one time, for drinking, and visits to brothels. They returned to the Dojo dormitories or wherever they were staying, or the next morning, forget how the story went, just reeking of Sake, and whatever smell a brothel has. In east Asia I have been told that brothels have this unmistakeable smell, and that Asian women often know where their husbands have been just by smelling them. If anyone on answers has been to an east asian brothels I would be happy to know what that smell is.

Whatever the case, they reeked of Sake and hookers, and, incensed, not pissed off, not %26quot;angry,%26quot; incensed, O-Sensei whacked them over the head with a bokken. Now he did not bash their brains in but I thought, when I read about that it was a bit excessive. He did not expel them from the school, nevertheless, let that give a hint of the sort of man he was. Even at his very worst, Gichin Funakoshi never did such a thing, the worst he ever did was give Hidetaka Nishiyama a black eye to teach him a lesson in humility. Hidetaka Nishiyama has some discoloration on his left eye, precisely the size of master Fuankoshi%26#039;s fist. Don%26#039;t tell him I said this if you know him, but I think that in his younger days, he got cocky and overly sure of himself, and out of control. To teach him a lesson in humility, albeit reluctantly, master Funakoshi gave him a black eye. Hey, it could have been worse; in Okinawa, masters have been known to cripple students, so they could still work and make a living, but they would never be able to use Karate again, if they ever misused their martial art. In China I heard of a similar practice; for any unruly monks, the Shaolin of old would use Chin Na full force, basically rendering the limb useless for martial arts.

If the story regarding Nishiyama and Funakoshi is true, it could have been much worse. So, yeah I believe the fact that Funakoshi was a gentleman; considering the strict, often harsh penalties old school martial arts masters had against anyone who misused what they taught their students, Gichin Funakoshi should what manner of man he was, considering what ethics allowed him to do, in only giving Nishiyama a black eye. Although a competent Karateka, I have heard stories that Hidetaka Nishiyama is somewhat arrogant, that, I do not believe would have rubbed master Funakoshi the right way. Hence the reason I think, that discoloration on his left eye, was a painful lesson in humility taught to him by the founder of Shotokan.

Oh yeah, Aikido; to be fully ranked, and a respected black belt, you need aproximately a decade. The way you tell authentic Aikido schools from fake ones apart, is that the authentic ones won%26#039;t pull punches about how long it takes. In Aikido you are dealing with the use of physics, as they apply to the human body, as a weapon, because most of are conditioned to hurt and use agression in a confrontation, Aikido is %26quot;counterintuitive%26quot; to people, hence the reason 10 years of training are needed. A person will only master Aikido, and be able to use it in a real fight, within a year, only if they have a %26quot;pure soul.%26quot; The reason Aikido masters are respected in Japan, is the deep connection with Zen Buddhism, but more importantly to the Japanese, Shinto. Again, Aikido is strictly nonviolent, and any punching and kicking is done to aide in practice, not to hurt. Now it has to be done full force, otherwise the move won%26#039;t work on the side of the thrower. The attacker must attack with all of their power for the thrower to be able to throw them. See, to be able to catch a fist or foot flying at full speed, or an entire body attempting a tackle, or american football or rugby style shoulder hit, a person needs to be calm, and at peace. The peaple most calm, and most at peace, are people with %26quot;pure hearts.%26quot; Hence the reason it is believed that %26quot;pure souls%26quot; master Aikido the fastest.

This religious belief, that exists also in Buddhism, is also the reason why martial arts masters prefered to train children. The majority of children are still innocent|||It depends on how fast you move up each level. That is different for everyone. I moved up three levels in less than a year if that helps you. Once you get past the yellow belt with blue stripe, it involves much more skill, so it may take you longer to achieve belts once you get to this point. I would say probably a couple of years to get to black belt. |||dmaud, I have no idea where your answers come from but they pretty much all read the same to me. %26quot;insert master%26quot; is really really really good. I mean scary good. %26quot;insert story found on internet%26quot;. This shows how really really really good they are. But I think they represent the truly scary skill of asian martial artists.

Not to rag on this, using some famous names from a style does let people look these things up for themselves but the posts seems a little much for my taste.

To answer the question about the belt, it is determined by your skill level, time spent training and another of a dozen other possible requirements your dojo has. Many Japanese dojos will require not just physical skills but language components, for example, learning 10 new words.

My suggestion is don%26#039;t worry about the time because it will fly by if you are having fun. Train hard and enjoy yourself.|||A student once asked O%26#039;Sensei that very question.

%26quot;O%26#039;Sensei, if I study aikido every day, how long will it take for me to attain the rank of shidon?%26quot;

%26quot;Around five years%26quot;, O%26#039;Sensei replied.

%26quot;What if I study twice each day?%26quot;

%26quot;Ten years.%26quot;

%26quot;What if I study three times each day?%26quot;

O%26#039;Sensei laughed and said, %26quot;Twenty years!%26quot;

One should not enter the study of aikido with the aim of aattaing rank and acquiring honors as such will distract one from learning the art of peace and realizing him or herself.

Study as though you will always be a beginner, as if each class is totally new as in reality it will be!

Always be in the present moment and let the future worry about itself.

Your sensei will tell you when it time to test and, regardless of the kyu you may be testing for, he or she will know and will have seen what you know and how you understand the same during your class work. to be asked to teat is to have already passed the same.

Please to remember, O%26#039;Sensei told us that it is alwasy best to practice with a happy heart truning the anger of others and that iside ones self into joy and peace.

Be well, my fellow aikidoka.|||martial arts generally will take you 2-10 years to get a black belt generally you will get it at the latest in 7 years but some take longer.

it all depends on how hard you train and how good you are.|||it takes 4 years for this to happen .sandman
