Is olympic wrestling "real" and aikido "a dream"?

If the artistic techniques or aikido were real, why are olympic wrestling fights different?|||I%26#039;m sorry but I have to burst your bubble on this one: the akidoka will not fare well against the wrestler. Aikido is a fair art for self defense, but there has not been any aikidoka that I know of who have been successful in combat sports. To say it nicely, it doesn%26#039;t translate well into sport.

There is no need to pit the aikidoist against a greco-roman player in greco-roman. When you have a screw you don%26#039;t use a hammer to drive it in. You finesse it in with a screwdriver. And in the same manner the aikidoka can use timing and technique to defend himself in the street. But in the mat/ring/octagon it%26#039;s hammer and nails.|||no they are both real and they are both completely different things|||olympic wrestling is elite wrestler against elite wrestler.

They use the most effective techniques they can use against eachother. The %26quot;artistic%26quot; techniques demonstrated in martial arts such as aikido would be effective against inexperienced opponents, and would be used for self defence purposes. If an aikido master tried to use his techniques against an olympic wrestler, I can%26#039;t help but think he would end up on his back.|||Yes. Wrestling is athlete against athlete in a resisting match up where they compete. Aikido is set up with one person ready to attack, when the other person is ready they overcomit and then use their energy against them for a throw. In a wrestling situation, the wrestler would not be as likely to overcomit and because it isn%26#039;t scripted, the Aikido stylist would have difficulty.

I have taken a variety of martial arts and can tell you that you can be taught something and it works great - but as soon as the other person starts to resist and stop cooperating, you would need to have to practiced the throws with that possibility or you will be unable to correct them in a more live situation. I%26#039;m not slamming Aikido, I am more familiar with Hapkido where things start out more slow and gradually you add more resistance and switch from technique to technique rather quickly. My experience with Aikido has been with people that had previously studied it and they%26#039;ve had some basics - but had to throw the bulk of sometimes years of training out the window and start over with learning how to %26quot;tighten%26quot; the circles them make with their throw when people don%26#039;t overcomit on their techniques and stop cooperating.|||Aikido has alot of throws and they are VERY useful but as for Aikido and just about all korean arts that is the only thing usefull.....(for the most part)|||Olympic wrestling is called Greeko Roman wrestling which has been in the Olympics since the time it was inducted by the Greeks and then in the Modern times. Aikido is a entirely different Martial Art and uses the power of a attacker against them not at all like Greeko Roman wrestling which is all about strength. Techniques are as different as day and night as well.|||Aikido is awesome|||They are both real, Aikido is very cool in practice and reality, look at Steven Seagull
