I want to practice Aikido, but I have NES.... what can I do?

NES - Non-Epileptic Seizures - are seizures that are not controlled by medication. The local Aikido dojo doesn%26#039;t want the headache if I collapse into convulsions, but I need exercise, a mental focus, and something to do that doesn%26#039;t involve children.....

Can I learn on my own?

What books can I read?

Are there any E-Dojos?|||Azgringo is correct in that an aikido dojo should not turn anyone away.

O%26#039;Sensei Morihei Ueshiba wanted everyone to learn the art of peace.

One thing to consider or to be aware of, in aikido, you do have to learn to take ukemi (falls) as well as to perform various throwingtechniquess. If your seizures occur more when you are tired and stressed, you may want to begin by taking class one day a week and see how that goes and graduallybuildl,d up to daily practice (something else that O%26#039;Sensei recommended).

Perhaps you can find another dojo or you can educate the sensei at the dojo you have found so that they understand where you are coming from and can assist you in your personal journey in aikido.

May it all be well with you.|||Kisshomaru put it wonderfully.

You%26#039;re going to have a bit of a tough time: not because of seizures or anything physical, but it%26#039;s imperative that you provide the schools with the necessary, relevant information so that they can best accommodate you.

Consider spending the time contacting various schools, offer to send them information on NES, and find one which will help you. Best of luck to you!|||Aikido can only be learned in a dojo, as it%26#039;s a martial art that requires training with another individual.

A true Aikido dojo worthy of training would not and should not tell someone w/ NES that they are not welcome at their dojo. I have been training in Aikido for 4 years and I%26#039;ve seen all types welcome at our dojo, including a blind man. Search aikido.com for another dojo.|||I do not know much about NES, but maybe try Tai Chi to calm the mind and prepare your self. Aikido, from my knowledge, is a pretty calm martial art. Focus%26#039; on using your opponents momentum against them. Maybe try Aikido once a week, so it is less likely to happen while in your classes.

Best of Luck!|||im pretty sure you will be able to get in an aikido school, aikido is not a striking art, it utlilizes the force that your opponents gives you and you turn them back to them, unlike me who practices Taekwondo, we strike alot lol
