I want to join Aikido, but is it a good martial art?

I heard it doesn%26#039;t work in real life situations and need to know, thanks.|||It most definately does work in practical %26#039;real life%26#039; situations. It%26#039;s highly effective against more than one enemy, particularly two, which a number of techniques are designed specifically for. Aikido is predominately an Internal art, and is completely devoid of striking. This is not to say it%26#039;s ineffective - in the hands of a skilled pratcitioner, striking isn%26#039;t necessary, and I have seen it work with great results numerous times.

The philosophy is that of necessary force dictated by situation as limit. Basically, it means you don%26#039;t break, and always use the least destructive path possible to effectively control and then neutralize the situation. It is not an aggressive art, and in all reality contains no strikes or %26#039;attacks.%26#039; It%26#039;s a reactive art, the result dictated by the method and form of attack waged against the practitioner.

It%26#039;s a very useful art, not only in combat but in life. I would highly recommend it. Aikido, as with any martial art, will be claimed by some to be useless and a %26#039;dance%26#039;. These are people who never attained any actual rank or developed any real skill in it, or those who%26#039;s masters chose for various reasons not to dictate advanced skill sets to. It%26#039;s not for everyone, though.

My advice? Try it out, see what%26#039;s what, and listen to your gut.

It%26#039;s almost always never wrong.|||Yea i take it myself for 4 years

Personally too it is best for Defensive and sometimes the offensive(not really)

and most time a good defensive means you will never lose a fight

Teachings of Ki(know as many things in other martial art) is the Key to Aikido and once you get it then you got the 4 princples which will help you be a master of aikido

(aikido is not a fighting art but it is a art to send his anger and help him too the floor)

and aikido teaches grace, one with your oppent

and i hate when people say that it doesn%26#039;t work in real life situations

It teaches you:

Knife safety

Sword safety

Defend against Punches,kicks

Also the Orgins of aikido is:

Karate

Ju Jitsu

Judo

(more can%26#039;t remeber)

and the last of all you should take it because if you want to try another Martial Art like Ju Jitsu it has some or most of the Take downs|||Yes, any art taught well is good. I have one friend who studied Aikido for 10 years before he moved to the Northeast, up here he studies Wu style Taiji with me, and he%26#039;s my push hands partner, he is good.

I teach Krav Maga, we are a combat art, system and philosophy, very simple, to survive, and yet there is this part of me that has an insatiable appetite to know more and more of this treasure chest known as Taiji. The point is that any art is effective if taught well and practiced diligently.

Your mind (Yi) and intent have to be right, and you have to take it seriously, if you do, you will reap the dividends of devotion to the art.|||Aikido is considered by many to be the ultimate defensive fighting style. It is so much more about defense than offense that many aikidoka need to crosstrain in more offensive styles to be able to better defend themselves. Aikido is great against multiple attackers is you develop a proficiency in it. I would not discourge taking Aikido.|||Do not take akido it is a waste of time for real life situations, in a real life situation complex techniques are dangerous to apply because fights are so fast any cmplex technique could result in serious problems. go for jujitsu, muay thai, boxing or shoot wrestling and even consider wing chun kungfu-if you go to a good wing chun school you can gain good technique however the problem is finding a good school and not a mcdojo|||depends like it is a great style if ur a master or realy fast but it is on a lower level very innefficient.it is my favorite art but for the most part i can already defend mysellf.the strenght o this style is they teach u to fight multiple opponents. it is a coolthing based on peace winning a fight and not hurting ur opponenet it is in the end al up to u though|||Yes it is!!!!

As aikido is an evasive art combined with throws and locks and striking :)***|||I have taken Aikido before but I would definitely recommend Judo or bjj over it-if you%26#039;re looking for a practical self defense-I guess it would also depend on how physically fit you are-aikido tends to be more accepting of people who are out of shape.|||no it is a waste of time, take muay thai, brazilian jiu jitsu or mixed martial arts, if you want something simular to aikido tak judo instead
