How practical are the techniques of Aikido?

Against grabs, holds, charging, lunging attackers it works quite well. However like any art, it is only as effective as the practitioner.|||Like anything else, how their trained and who uses them determines their practicality. Some of the toughest guys I know, who work as bouncers and corrections officers, have backgrounds primarily in Aikido. However they seem to be the exception rather than the rule. I see a lot of Aikido training which is laughable. But then, the blame is on the training, not the techniques.|||Aikido can be devastatingly effective for a %26#039;soft%26#039; martial art, that places emphasis on self-defense rather than striking. That%26#039;s a fact. Techniques can be dangerous so no sparring is involved, only something called %26#039;randori%26#039; which involves multiple attackers charging at you one by one.

The only downisde of Aikido is that it takes a very long period of learning to effectively apply techniques in actual situations, as compared to other popular striking arts.

So if you have the time, patience and interest, then Aikido is highly reccommended.|||Fairly. My opinion is that Aikido is very beneficial for those who are pursuing spiritual enlightenment, and is also useful for anyone who has mastered another martial art. The ideas and techniques of Aikido can be applied to any harder fighting style (Hard as in Karate, Boxing, Savate etc) and be of great benefit. |||Try attacking an Aikido master and you will know if its techniques are practical. Before you dismiss a martial art as impractical/ineffective, try it out first. Never say that a particular martial art is better or inferior than the other, it%26#039;s very disrespectful. Most of you have been watching too much UFC.

|||The training methodology and practitioner is the only thing that can hurt it, and the former really isn%26#039;t a factor if one has ways of testing the techniques realistically. There are many good aikido schools. A lot more than the keyboard ninjers that have never taken it think. |||Against a Muay Thai fighter how would an aikido artist defend against elbows, knees, kicks, and strikes? How would Aikido defend against jiu-jitsu? Against a non trained fighter yes it works. Against a fighter that understands balance and leverage no it wouldn%26#039;t work.|||They don%26#039;t work. A demo is a demo. They don%26#039;t work outside of that. Really none are practical.

The burden of proof is on those claiming they are, they%26#039;ve been proven ineffective.|||many will say that most are done on a willing opponent but I saw a demo when one guy did not follow and everyone heard the most disgusting sound for those that cannot follow

yes it does work|||not practical. at all.
