Is training and fighting Aikido hard?

What does training consist of, what are matches like, are there any competitions? |||Hi there

just so you know you will probably get lots of stick for asking this on yahoo answers. in general this forum tends to be used by fans rather than practitioners.

Training wise Aikido is what they call a thinking mans art. It can take ages to learn and can be frustrating for new students. But dont let that put you off.

Is it hard on the body? Yes and no!

No because its not a striking art as such so dont expect a boxing match.

Yes because if you dont uke propperly you can expect injuries that take months to get better such as very bad dislocations. Again dont be put off.

Koryu aikido isnt sports based its more about development. Tomiki aikido is sports based and has many competitions based around randori, tanto dori and kata. So it depends which one you prefer?

People will come on here and try and push their views onto you. Dont let them this is negative and not the martial way. Make your own mind up and try a few arts first before you settle on the one you like.

Like i said get ready for the MMA fans comments!

Here they come! lol

Best wishes

idai|||There are no competitions in the practice of aikido.

One practice particular techniques with a partner. The one throwing is %26quot;nage%26quot;, the one receiving is %26quot;uke%26quot;.

The sensei leading the class chooses what techniques will be studied in that particular class.

Aikido is based on the Japanese sword so all foot work corresponds to the movement used in sword work.

One studies and hopefully learns to harmonize ones energy with that of all others.

In aikido there is a spiritual component as well as a community aspect.

Each student progresses at his or her own pace under the supervision of the sensei.

May it be well with you.|||Training consists of various modified Japanese Jujitsu techniques backed by philosophical concepts.

There are no matches or competitions in the general aikido community.

Shodokan Aikido holds competitions but I%26#039;ve yet to actually find much of anything on this, save a wiki stub and 1 youtube video.

|||ive been training for 7 years now and ive been fine..a little tired when i first started after class but other than that and a few sore wrist%26#039;s i was fine...aikido does not do competitions but the do demonstrations like japanfest.but aikido has been the best martial art ive ever done |||The above answers are great. Aikido requires a learning curve but its rewarding.

In regards to mma types that will give u flak about it....let%26#039;s just put it this way. while ur deftly avoiding and moving through multiple attackers, the mma guy is still working a submission on the first attacker.
